Miniature Abstract – Sisal

Class title: Abstract, Miniature
Staging: More than 4cm and less than 10cm overall
Just like the large floor designs, miniatures are a challenge to get the scale of the design correct. Proportion and scale are the most important factors for judges in the miniature class.

Abstract designs need to use horticultural material in non conventional or unnatural ways so it gives us great scope for artistic interpretation.

Here I have used some cardboard as the structure, loosely wrapped with coloured sisal. The flowers are dried gypsophila, in a lighter shade of pink to the sisal, placed upside down on one section of the cardboard and horizontally on top of another piece.

Nothing in this design is an embellishment – the cardboard, sisal and flowers are all derived from or actual plant material.

Judging feedback: Good scale and proportion to all the parts of this design. The floral material could have been a bolder contrasting colour to give greater abstract impact.
