Rhythmic Lines

Rhythmic Lines1Staged on cube 60cm square, space allowed 60cm square, judged all around, roses only flower to be used, mixed foliage permitted.

A good challenging title this which includes a number of important design elements – rhythm, line, restricted flower choice (only roses) and a space that is contained within the staging provided – not the usual sizing for this staging.

My thoughts in planning this design centred around the rhythm I wanted to show both visually and actually. The roses have lines of colour, the foliage has distinct lines of shape, the containers have lines of metal as part of their construction. All of this needs to be blended together to give an harmonious whole to the design.

The containers are three graduated size metallic candle holders, placed centrally close together to enable a spiral of roses to descend from the top of the grouping to the base.

The design must show something different at every angle for this judging so I have left the foliage minimal to enable the depth of the design to be obvious.

Rhythmic Lines2

This design placed first. The judge suggested some lighter foliage that followed the spiral of the roses would have enhanced the Rhythmic Lines even further. It did gain additional points for the use of roses with lines of colour in them. Your choice of plant material is important in helping to interpret the class title.
