Celebration – Member Competition Winner

Member Competition Winner July 2018

Title: Celebration (to be named)

Celebration

Construction notes: A birthday cake constructed from layers of cardboard covered on the top with washi paper and the sides with crushed Xanthorrhoea seeds. The cake topper arrangement of orchids, used as a special flower to enhance the “celebratory” feel of the design is based in floral foam. Three single flowers are secured in the “cut piece of cake” with a small water vial in the “cake”.

Fabric matching the colours of the flowers and the card, base the design.

Character and Form – 12/15. This design meets the brief well. It shows contemporary techniques and has a real celebratory feel – who doesn’t like cake for a celebration? The creative use of plant material in an extended definition (washi paper, cardboard, seeds), lifted this design above others in the competition.
